  • TPREL will invest ₹6,675 crore to set up a 10 GW ingot and wafer plant in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh
  • The project will generate about 1,000 jobs and use captive green energy
  • It supports India’s push for domestic solar manufacturing

Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) has green-lighted the construction of a new 10 GW ingot and wafer plant in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, which will cost the company ₹6,675 crore. This will be the biggest and the first such plant in India, and it will also be a vital boost to the local production of indispensable parts needed for semiconductor chips, solar cells, and solar modules.

The government of Andhra Pradesh has offered 200 acres for the project in the Iffco Kisan Special Economic Zone. The current facility will use 120 acres, and 80 acres will be set aside for future expansion. The project will complement the Indian government's initiative to increase local solar manufacturing and lessen the dependency on imports, especially from China.

The proposal has received approvals from the State Investment Promotion Board and the State Investment Promotion Committee, both of which are chaired by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, and it has been indicated that the Cabinet would decide on the matter eventually. The company’s report mentions that the plant will provide jobs directly to about 1,000 people.

Andhra Pradesh will ensure a sustainable setup by providing land for a 200 MW green energy plant, which will be the sole source of power for the facility.

“Andhra Pradesh is proud to host yet another landmark investment from Tata group. This project is a strong vote of confidence in our state’s policy stability, infrastructure readiness and commitment to clean energy manufacturing”, stated IT minister Nara Lokesh.

The availability of renewable energy was the main reason why the state was able to bring in the investment. Although TPREL had considered Odisha as one of the sites, Andhra Pradesh’s land already being prepared and its being near Krishnapatnam port were again in favor of Andhra Pradesh.

Nellore is very quickly becoming a center for solar manufacturing. There are plans for similar projects from other companies as well. This plant will be the first one for TPREL under the dramatic ₹49,000 crore renewable energy investment commitment made to the state in March last year.
