Tata Power, TN Govt Launch Twin Solar Skill Centres
- Two Solar SCoEs opened in Pettai and Sattur under a DET–Tata Power partnership
- Courses in solar installation, maintenance, and safety with national certification
- Supports Tata Power’s Tirunelveli plant and builds a skilled local workforce
Tata Power Tamil Nadu has launched solar skill centres to provide renewable energy training, developing a green workforce in India with advanced solar energy skills. With the opening of two Solar Skill Centres of Excellence (SCoE) in Pettai, Tirunelveli and Sattur, Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu has furthered its renewable energy aspirations.
This Tata Power initiative supports Tamil Nadu renewable projects through a comprehensive solar training program, promoting clean energy India and creating green jobs India.
The first SCoE and training facilities at each location have been developed with a Public-Private Partnership model that includes the Directorate of Employment and Training (DET), Government of Tamil Nadu, and the Tata Power Skill Development Institute (TPSDI). The SCoEs aim to build a cadre of skilled and certified workers for the growing clean energy industry in Tamil Nadu.
Dr. R. Sukumar, IAS, District Collector Tirunelveli, and Mr. Parthasarathy Balaji, CEO of TPSolar, formally opened the SCoE and training facilities with senior officials Smt. K. Karpagam, Ms. Anupama Ratta, and Mr. Alok Prasad.

The new training facilities will provide hands-on training programs for industry-based curriculums covering solar panel installation and maintenance, energy efficiency, and electrical safety.
The programs are aligned with national standards issued by NCVET and NSDC and funded under MNRE’s PM: Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana initiative, a Green Jobs program in India. Upon program completion graduates will earn certifications recognized nationally, enhancing employability as solar installers, field technicians, and system supervisors.
These centres are positioned near Tata Power’s solar cell and module manufacturing facility in Tirunelveli, which has a capacity of 4.3 GW. Through a unique combination of skill development, manufacturing, and project experience, the goal is to foster a skilled workforce that can be self-reliant with renewable energy transitional skills.
This integrated model is intended to create jobs locally, grow the solar capacity within the state, and facilitate the transition of Tamil Nadu to sustainable and inclusive energy development in the southern region of India.
