  • New metro expansion reduces pollution, traffic, and improves commuter access.
  • Delhi Metro Phase V(A) adds 16km, 13 stations, and future growth.

The Union Cabinet has approved a major expansion of the Delhi Metro network, sanctioning Rs 12,015 crore for the construction of three new metro corridors as part of the Delhi Metro Phase V(A) project. This strategic initiative aims to significantly ease traffic congestion in the national capital and curb air pollution, strengthening sustainable urban transport in one of India’s most densely populated cities.

Under the ambitious plan, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will develop approximately 16 kilometres of new track, adding 13 new metro stations to the network. Once completed, the expanded system will push the total length of the Delhi Metro beyond the 400-kilometre mark, reinforcing its status as one of the largest urban rail systems in the world.

The three corridors approved by the Cabinet are: R.K. Ashram Marg to Indraprastha (Central Vista corridor), a nearly 10-kilometre stretch that will provide direct connectivity to the Central Vista area, including Kartavya Bhawan, benefiting tens of thousands of commuters, office workers, and visitors each day. Aerocity to Indira Gandhi Airport Terminal-1 – a 2.26-kilometre line that will streamline airport access from southern Delhi areas such as Saket and Chattarpur. Tughlakabad to Kalindi Kunj – a 3.9-kilometre link boosting connectivity for residents in South Delhi and nearby suburbs.

Funding for this project will be shared between the Central government, the Delhi government, and international funding agencies, with multilateral loans forming a significant portion of the investment.

Officials highlight that the expansion will not only improve mobility across key parts of the National Capital Region (NCR), but also contribute to environmental goals by encouraging commuters to shift from private vehicles to mass transit, thus reducing carbon emissions and promoting a cleaner urban environment.
