Vikram Misri Reviews India–Sri Lanka Cooperation

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri reviewed India-assisted development projects and held high-level talks in Sri Lanka, reaffirming cooperation in connectivity, trade, energy, infrastructure, and regional security under India's Neighbourhood First policy.

Foreign Secretary of India, Vikram Misri, has completed his official visit to Sri Lanka, during which he highlighted India's intent to further bolster their bilateral relationship through the implementation of their policies such as 'Neighbourhood First' and Vision MAHASAGAR. In the course of his stay in Sri Lanka, Vikram Misri discussed important projects and initiatives between both countries with their political leaders.

During the visit, Misri met with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, and Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath. The talks revolved around the assessment of cooperation between the two countries in areas of mutual interest, namely trade, investments, energy, maritime security, connectivity, digital infrastructure, and development cooperation. It was reiterated by both sides that there should be sustained high-level interaction for the speedy implementation of development projects in Sri Lanka.

One of the major areas on which the visit focused on was the review of India assisted development projects being conducted in Sri Lanka. Misri examined the progress that has been made in relation to the development of infrastructure, housing, transportation, renewable energy, and community development in the country, which is the largest development partner of Sri Lanka.

The two sides also assessed the progress made on economic undertakings that were significant for the purpose of bilateral integration. The agenda of discussion included furthering talks regarding the modernization of the India-Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement; signing a Social Security Agreement for the workers; extending Indian Rupee-denominated credit lines for infrastructure development, and cooperation in areas of trade, investment, and financial connectivity.

Connectivity and energy cooperation were major aspects of the discussions. Both the countries evaluated various projects that were taking place in regard to air and maritime connectivity, power grid connectivity, renewable energy cooperation, and strategic infrastructure development. The issues of improving logistics and enhancing connectivity in the Indian Ocean region were also considered. Maritime security and regional stability continued to be important aspects of the discussion due to the common goal of securing their neighborhood.

India reiterated its commitment to the growth and development of Sri Lanka through grants, concessional finance, and capacity building. Misri emphasized that the developmental partnership with Sri Lanka would remain consistent with the country's agenda, emphasizing inclusiveness, resilience, and people-to-people connection. Disaster preparedness, housing, education, health, and digital economy were also among other areas of cooperation during the visit.

This visit helped strengthen the increasing momentum in India-Sri Lanka ties in the wake of high-level interactions between the two nations in recent months. Through an assessment of strategic projects, furthering economic cooperation, and reiterating their commitment to the Neighbourhood First Policy, both nations have shown their intent of working together for peace and stability in the region.
