Karnataka, Italy Explore Startup, AI and Space Tech Partnerships
Karnataka and Italy explore partnerships in startups, AI, space, DeepTech and urban technology, with plans for accelerator programmes, market-access mechanisms, research collaboration and stronger industry-academia linkages.
There is an attempt by the Karnataka government and Italy to explore collaboration within startups, artificial intelligence, space tech, DeepTech and research as it tries to create more links internationally for its innovation system. There are talks between the Department of Electronics, IT and BT in Karnataka and Italy’s ambassador to India, Antonio Bartoli, on how to build viable partnerships between both sides.
The talks are being moderated by Dr N Manjula, who is the Secretary of the Electronics, IT, Biotechnology, and Science & Technology Department of Karnataka. The state emphasises its existing innovation ecosystem consisting of startups, industries, universities, and research institutions which operate in cutting-edge technologies. Both parties look into ways to build up better collaboration and knowledge-sharing channels.

An important recommendation is the establishment of three to four startup acceleration programs for specific sectors. This is anticipated to link entrepreneurs from both Karnataka and Italy to technical expertise, investment firms, corporate houses, and possible business associates. The success of these programs can then result in their extension to other sectors.
Soft landing arrangements are also discussed between Karnataka and Italy to make it easier for start-ups to enter into one another’s market. The proposed framework provides access to physical space, ecosystem network, industrial collaboration, and research institutions, which may be advantageous to innovative firms to build up their presence in foreign markets.
The third cooperation area is that of Space and DeepTech. Both partners explore opportunities related to earth observation, disaster management, and environment monitoring. This is because these sectors will definitely benefit from the availability of technology, research, and innovation capabilities in Karnataka and Italy.
Another domain of collaboration that has been recognised is that of artificial intelligence, and its association with the proposed AI university of Karnataka. This university has been established as a joint venture between the public and private sector, and it focuses on advanced and frontier research and post-graduate/post-doctoral studies.
Partnership talks will also address increased industry-academia partnerships through collaborative programs and research initiatives. Urban technology is another area that is being looked into, which could involve partnerships in integrated public transportation, intermodal connectivity, and passenger information systems and predictive maintenance using artificial intelligence.

Karnataka mentions the Global Innovation Growth Alliance (GIGA), which is a soft-landing program that is going to be used to assist foreign companies in entering the Indian market. In addition, Italy is planning to have an institution/business delegation attend the Bengaluru Tech Summit in 2026.
The two sides have also looked into closer collaboration between innovation hotspots such as Mangaluru and institutions in the areas of science and technology, energy, urban technology and design. The attention will now move from general debates to specific projects that include startups and sectors where success might be replicated.
