India and Russia Strengthen Defence Technology Ties
India and Russia have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding defence, industrial, and technological cooperation during the fifth Army Land System Sub-Group meeting in New Delhi, strengthening collaboration in military innovation and indigenous defence manufacturing.
Both India and Russia have reiterated their pledge for the expansion of cooperation in the fields of defense, industry and technology at the fifth meeting of the India-Russia Army Land System Sub-Group (ALSSG) underway in New Delhi. This high-level interaction is indicative of the ongoing progress in the enduring strategic defense partnership of the two nations.
Indian representatives will be led by Lt. Gen. Rahul R. Singh, Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Capability Development & Sustenance). On behalf of Russia, Maj. Gen. Aleksandr Tufekchi, Deputy Head of the Main Armoured Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Defence will represent his country. Officials from both nations will discuss ongoing defence projects and explore ways to cooperate in new areas.

Both sides reaffirmed their joint dedication to pursuing Defence Industrial and Technological Cooperation through deepening the level of trust and strategic engagement between them during the course of the discussions. The discussion is focused on increasing cooperation in the areas of development, manufacture, maintenance, and modernisation of land-based defence equipment, considering the needs of the two armed forces. This is in keeping with India’s strategy for building up its indigenous defence manufacturing capability.
The ALSSG meeting, which is expected to take place from August 4 to August 7 and last for four days, can be seen as a crucial institutional arrangement for the review of bilateral defence cooperation with regard to the land systems sector. It offers a forum where the military personnel and defence specialists of the two states can share their expertise on modern battlefield technology.
The strategic defence relationship between India and Russia has been in existence for many decades and has covered the fields of military equipment, research, licensing production, and technology cooperation. In recent years, both countries have given more importance to co-manufacturing, localisation of the defence industry, and technology transfer to help further the Make in India initiative. The ongoing collaboration in fields like missiles, armored fighting vehicles, fighter planes, and naval systems is at the heart of their defence cooperation.
