  • India, US discuss next phase of trade negotiations
  • Talks aim to advance interim bilateral trade deal
  • Focus on tariffs, market access, and trade framework

According to an announcement by Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, he and US Trade Representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer discussed how to take the next steps on the ongoing trade talks between India and the US. The announcement is the latest indication that both India and the US continue to put a lot of work into building a trading relationship and are continuing to build on this momentum.

As you may recall, an interim US-India trade agreement is being negotiated by the two nations. This trade agreement has been several months in the making (often through multiple rounds of negotiations) and both nations have continued to work together to find solutions to issues related to tariffs, market access, and regulatory coordination to enhance their economic relationship. These interactions indicate to both countries that they both want to continue negotiating their trade relationship in an organised and timely manner.

Mr. Goyal stated that both countries were focused more on “next steps” in this negotiation process, which indicates to those involved in these discussions that both nations have now entered into a new, more advanced phase of negotiations related to this trade agreement.

Additional work has been accomplished by the parties to develop an agreement between the US and India as a result of previous meetings with all of the parties involved in this process, including officials and negotiators, to formalise them into a framework to promote more efficient movement of goods and higher levels of bilateral trade.

In the past few years, the trade relationship between India and the U.S. has taken on strategic significance. This has resulted from the changing dynamics of global supply chains and increasing demand for diverse economic partnerships.

Developing an interim agreement is seen as a stepping stone towards eventually reaching a full bilateral trade agreement; if both countries are successful, this agreement will result in vast increases in trade volume and investment flow between their two economies.

On an even larger scale, the continued interaction between Mr. Piyush Goyal (Indian Union Minister of Commerce and Industry) and Mr. Robert Greer (U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce) demonstrates the importance of facilitating ongoing diplomatic and economic dialogue when attempting to navigate complex trade negotiations.
