India and Armenia deepen defence cooperation by signing an MoU on research, development, innovation and joint production. The agreement expands their partnership beyond defence procurement and strengthens military-technical and industrial collaboration.

India and Armenia are taking their burgeoning defence relations to the next level with a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on research, development, innovation and joint production in the defence sector. During the visit of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh to Armenia, an agreement is signed to broaden defence cooperation beyond defence procurement to technology development and industrial cooperation.

During the visit, Singh held talks with senior Armenian defence officials, Deputy Defence Minister Karen Brutyan and First Deputy Defence Minister and Chief of General Staff Edward Asryan. The MoU signed just now provides a platform for both nations to cooperate in defence research, innovation and joint production. The partnership is anticipated to facilitate more engagement between their defence sectors and provide an opportunity to develop technology and capabilities in a joint manner.

The deal highlights the growing strategic ties between New Delhi and Yerevan. Defence cooperation has become one of the most important aspects of bilateral relations with India over the past few years, with Armenia receiving a number of equipment systems and systems from India. The deepening involvement has also provided opportunities for India to bolster its defence industrial presence in the South Caucasus region.

In addition to equipment provision, the latest one focuses more on establishing a long-term Defence technology partnership. Collaborative R&D can facilitate the sharing of knowledge and expertise, as well as the development of new solutions and enhance home defence manufacturing capabilities.

The two countries also explore how military cooperation can be improved, such as in the area of training and capacity building. Such efforts are expected to lead to increased institutional involvement and better defence-to-defence relations.

This interaction between India and Armenia follows both sides' efforts to strengthen bilateral strategic partnership as the security scenario of the region is changing. Fostering deeper defence-industrial cooperation with Armenia is a chance for India to bolster its position as a defence technology and equipment partner and for Armenia to benefit from India's growing indigenous defence industry and innovation landscape.

The new MoU thus reflects a new paradigm of a more cooperative approach in the framework of India-Armenia Defence Cooperation, as the processes of research, innovation and joint production are also becoming an integral part of the cooperation.
