
India to Host 16th BRICS Health Ministers' Meeting
Synopsis: India is hosting the 16th BRICS Health Ministers’ Meeting in Chandigarh from July 22–24, focusing on digital health, AI, pandemic preparedness, health security, and equitable healthcare to strengthen collaboration among BRICS nations.
The meeting will take place in Chandigarh from July 22 to 24 under India’s chairmanship of BRICS for the year 2026 and it will see health ministers, senior officials, and technical experts of the 11-nation bloc come together to work towards enhanced cooperation in public health matters. The three-day meeting is expected to further enhance cooperation in areas such as health security, digital health, pandemic preparedness, and equitable access to quality health care.
The program kicks off with the Senior Officials’ Meeting, during which the delegates will deliberate upon important health priorities and finalize the draft ministerial declaration. Thereafter, the Health Ministers’ Meeting, to be chaired by Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda, will take place, and in this forum, the member states will discuss ways and means to tackle new public health challenges and promote multilateral cooperation.

One of the key areas that would be discussed at this meeting would be digital health and artificial intelligence whereby the participating nations would find means of making use of technology to enhance the efficiency of health care delivery, disease monitoring, and health system resiliency. There would also be discussions on how digital public infrastructure can be used to improve access to health care services.
Another item on the agenda is collaboration in the areas of pandemic preparedness, health security, elimination of TB, infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, mental health care, and universal health coverage. Countries attending this summit will share their experiences and work towards collaboration to create resilient healthcare systems that can handle any future health emergencies. Equitable access to good and affordable healthcare is one of the key goals of this summit.
Alongside the ministerial talks, India is also organizing the 4th BRICS Technical Meeting on Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine, which reflects the increasing importance of traditional health systems in contributing to holistic health. The meeting seeks to foster cooperation in research and the integration of traditional medicines in health care systems.

The summit is in line with the BRICS Chairship theme of "Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability" that highlights India's focus on cooperative approach to health problems around the globe. The results achieved in the summit at Chandigarh will have a direct influence on the future actions of BRICS in matters concerning health and its institutions' cooperation.
