India-Nepal Ties Strengthened by Connectivity and Collaboration

India and Nepal strengthen bilateral ties through expanding physical, digital and people-to-people connectivity, while cooperation grows across hydropower, trade, technology, startups, renewable energy, aviation and other emerging sectors.

India and Nepal are strengthening their bilateral partnership through expanding physical, digital and people-to-people connectivity, alongside growing cooperation in trade, hydropower, information technology, startups, renewable energy and other emerging sectors. Indian Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava highlights the progress during the India-Nepal Dialogue, stressing that stronger connectivity is creating new opportunities for collaboration between the two neighbours.

Speaking at NDTV World's Anviksha India-Nepal Dialogue, Srivastava says India's approach focuses on enhancing connectivity while expanding economic and commercial engagement. He notes that Nepal has undergone significant transformation in recent years, particularly in infrastructure, roads, connectivity and hydropower, creating a stronger foundation for bilateral cooperation.

Physical connectivity remains an important pillar of the relationship. India and Nepal have continued to develop cross-border infrastructure and transport links aimed at facilitating the movement of people and goods. Improved road and other connectivity networks are helping strengthen trade and regional economic integration between the two countries.

Hydropower is another major area of cooperation. Indian companies are involved in several hydropower projects in Nepal, while expanding energy cooperation provides opportunities for Nepal to utilise its substantial hydropower potential and strengthen electricity trade with India. The energy partnership has increasingly become an important component of bilateral economic relations.

The two countries are also expanding cooperation in digital connectivity and technology. India's digital ecosystem and Nepal's growing technology sector create opportunities for collaboration in information technology, startups and digital services. The broader India-Nepal partnership has also included efforts to strengthen digital payment connectivity, including cross-border UPI-based transactions and remittance services.

Srivastava highlights the emergence of several new areas of cooperation beyond traditional sectors. These include aviation, information technology, renewable energy, space and sports, reflecting the diversification of the bilateral relationship. India and Nepal are also seeking to strengthen cooperation in areas that can contribute to innovation, employment and economic growth.

People-to-people relations continue to provide a strong foundation for the partnership. The close social, cultural and economic links between communities on both sides of the border support extensive movement and interaction. Enhanced connectivity is expected to further facilitate tourism, education, business and other forms of cross-border engagement.

The evolving partnership also reflects India's wider approach towards its neighbouring countries, with connectivity and development cooperation playing an increasingly important role. Improved infrastructure and stronger economic links can help Nepal access wider markets while creating opportunities for Indian companies to participate in Nepal's development.

The relationship also includes cooperation on regional and security issues. India and Nepal have maintained institutionalised engagement on border management and security, with both countries recently reaffirming their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation in these areas.
