  • Nepal expands focus on artificial intelligence policy and governance
  • Experts highlight opportunities in AI talent and digital infrastructure
  • Ethical regulation remains crucial for inclusive technology adoption

Nepal is increasingly positioning itself within the global artificial intelligence landscape as discussions around AI governance, digital infrastructure, and innovation gain momentum across the country. Policymakers, technology experts, and industry stakeholders are highlighting the need for Nepal to develop a balanced AI ecosystem that supports economic growth while ensuring ethical and inclusive implementation.

The country has already taken initial steps toward building a policy foundation for AI adoption. Nepal’s Ministry of Communication and Information Technology previously prepared its first concept paper on artificial intelligence, outlining the importance of regulations, digital infrastructure, cybersecurity, privacy protection, and skill development. The initiative reflects growing recognition that AI will play a major role in sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, education, tourism, and public services.

Experts believe Nepal has the potential to emerge as a cost-effective AI talent hub in South Asia. A growing number of Nepali professionals are contributing to international AI projects, while universities and private institutions are gradually expanding AI-related education and training programmes. Supporters argue that with stronger investment in research, infrastructure, and digital literacy, Nepal could attract global technology collaborations and create new economic opportunities.

At the same time, challenges remain significant. Nepal continues to face gaps in internet connectivity, electricity access, digital infrastructure, and AI readiness, particularly in rural areas. Concerns have also been raised over data privacy, misinformation, ethical governance, and the possibility of widening inequality if AI adoption primarily benefits urban populations. Analysts stress that effective regulation and inclusive implementation will be essential to ensure technology serves broader social development goals.

Another emerging area of focus is sustainable infrastructure. Nepal’s hydropower resources are increasingly being discussed as a potential advantage in supporting future AI-driven data centres and digital services. With global AI expansion driving higher energy demand, some experts believe Nepal could position itself as a greener regional technology destination if investments in infrastructure accelerate.

Overall, Nepal’s growing engagement with artificial intelligence reflects a broader regional shift toward digital transformation. While the country remains at an early stage of AI development, ongoing policy efforts and increasing awareness suggest that Nepal is preparing to participate more actively in the evolving global AI economy.
