India to Emerge as Trusted Electronics Supply Partner
- India aims to become global electronics supply chain hub
- Local manufacturing meets nearly half of domestic demand
- Semiconductor mission boosts domestic chip production capabilities
India is positioning itself as a trusted global supply chain partner in electronics manufacturing, with Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighting strong policy support, rising domestic capabilities, and growing global confidence in the country’s manufacturing ecosystem.
Speaking at the groundbreaking of the Google Cloud India AI Hub in Visakhapatnam, the minister emphasized that India is rapidly transitioning from a services-led economy to a technology and manufacturing powerhouse. The $15 billion project is expected to play a catalytic role in strengthening India’s position in global electronics and AI infrastructure value chains.
A key driver of this transformation is the significant progress made in electronics manufacturing. India has emerged as a major hub for mobile phone production, with smartphones now among the country’s top export categories. Additionally, nearly 50% of domestic electronics demand is being met through local manufacturing, reflecting a growing level of self-reliance.

The government’s push through initiatives like the Semiconductor Mission is further accelerating this shift. Commercial semiconductor production has already begun, marking a critical step toward building an end-to-end electronics ecosystem, from components to finished products.
Vaishnaw also called on global technology companies, including Google, to expand their manufacturing footprint in India by producing servers, GPUs, and chips locally. This aligns with India’s broader ambition to become a global hub for advanced technologies, including semiconductors, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and space technologies.
Strategically, India’s emergence as a trusted partner is underpinned by factors such as policy stability, respect for intellectual property, and strong geopolitical positioning, which have increased its attractiveness to global investors and manufacturers. The country’s growing talent pool and expanding infrastructure further reinforce its role in global supply chains.
Overall, India’s evolving electronics manufacturing ecosystem reflects a broader structural shift, moving from assembly-driven operations to deep manufacturing and innovation-led growth. As global supply chains diversify beyond traditional hubs, India is steadily establishing itself as a reliable and scalable partner in the global electronics landscape.
