Negi assumed charge as India’s Ambassador to Iran on September 3. Before taking up the assignment, he served as Joint Secretary for Oceania and the Indo-Pacific at India’s Ministry of External Affairs. His diplomatic experience includes work on India’s wider regional and international engagement.
The appointment follows a series of high-level engagements between India and Iran. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian visited New Delhi in September to participate in the 18th BRICS Summit held on September 12-13. During the visit, he met President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for discussions on bilateral relations and regional developments.
During Pezeshkian’s meeting with President Murmu, both sides discussed the longstanding friendship between India and Iran, including cultural and people-to-people connections. India also reiterated its commitment to pursuing enduring peace in the region through dialogue and diplomacy.
Pezeshkian also held talks with Prime Minister Modi during his visit. Modi said the two countries should move forward with a long-term and mutually beneficial strategy while noting that the regional situation was also discussed. India reiterated its position in favour of resolving regional conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy.

The latest diplomatic engagement comes after Modi and Pezeshkian also met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in Bishkek in August. Their discussions covered bilateral ties, developments in West Asia and the need for continued efforts toward regional peace and stability.
With Negi now formally presenting his credentials, India and Iran are expected to continue their engagement across bilateral and multilateral platforms. The latest development reinforces the two countries’ efforts to maintain diplomatic dialogue and advance cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
