ISRO Targets September 4 for Hawkeye Satellite Launch

ISRO prepares to launch EOS-5 aboard GSLV F17 on September 4, marking its return to the launchpad after eight months. The satellite will provide frequent Earth imagery for disaster management, agriculture, weather and security applications.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is preparing to return to the launchpad with the GSLV F17 mission, scheduled to carry the EOS-5 satellite into orbit on September 4, 2026. The mission marks a crucial step for the space agency after nearly eight months without a launch and follows two consecutive PSLV mission failures.

EOS-5, earlier known as GISAT-1A, is an advanced Earth-observation satellite designed to provide a continuous view of the Indian subcontinent from an altitude of nearly 36,000 kilometres. The satellite is expected to repeatedly image India's landmass during the day, supporting applications such as disaster management, weather monitoring, agriculture and national security.

The upcoming mission assumes particular significance because it follows the unsuccessful GSLV F10 mission in August 2021, which attempted to deploy the earlier EOS-03 satellite. That mission failed after an issue with the indigenous cryogenic upper stage prevented the satellite from reaching its intended orbit. EOS-5 effectively represents a successor to the earlier satellite programme.

The September mission also provides an opportunity for ISRO to demonstrate the reliability of the GSLV Mk II platform. Unlike the PSLV, which remains grounded while investigations continue following two consecutive failures, the GSLV Mk II does not share the PSLV's engines or critical propulsion systems. The vehicle recently demonstrated its capabilities by successfully launching the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) satellite.

EOS-5 is expected to strengthen India's capacity for near-real-time Earth observation. Its frequent imaging capability can help authorities monitor rapidly developing events, including cyclones, floods, cloudbursts and forest fires. The information can also support weather forecasting, agricultural planning and security-related applications.

The mission comes as ISRO pursues an ambitious launch schedule for the remainder of the financial year. ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan says the agency plans seven launches between now and March 2027, including the first uncrewed flight of the Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme. The organisation is targeting 12 satellite realisations and eight launch-vehicle missions during the financial year.

The return to flight is particularly important for ISRO's launch programme following the PSLV-C62 failure in January 2026. The agency has initiated investigations into the recent PSLV setbacks and is conducting validation work before the vehicle resumes operations.

Beyond its immediate Earth-observation applications, the EOS-5 mission is therefore an important confidence-building exercise for India's space programme. A successful launch would reinforce the reliability of the GSLV Mk II while enabling ISRO to resume a busy sequence of missions covering Earth observation, communications, navigation, science and human spaceflight.

With the September 4 launch approaching, the mission represents more than the deployment of another satellite. It marks an important opportunity for ISRO to regain launch momentum, demonstrate the maturity of its cryogenic propulsion capabilities and advance India's strategic Earth-observation infrastructure.
